NG Bailey employee, Shane Trevitt, is celebrating this week after beating off competition from around the globe and being awarded a gold medal at the world’s largest ever skills competition.
This year’s WorldSkills competition saw over 8,000 people pack out the O2 arena in London for the award presentations. Young people from 51 countries competed to be the best of the best in their chosen skill, which attracted over 200,000 visitors.
Shane gained the highest score in his specialist category of plumbing and heating and also picked up a medal for obtaining the highest score across all trades in the UK team.
He competed against engineers from 26 countries, including Austria, Malaysia and Iceland. Shane also came third overall across all categories in the competition, with over 1,000 people challenging for top spot.
Programme manager at NG Bailey, Lee Firth, has worked with Shane for a number of years and attended the presentation with him. He said: “This is an excellent achievement for Shane and I am very proud of him. He more than deserves this recognition for the hard work and dedication that he brings, not only to this competition, but to his work at NG Bailey.
“NG Bailey is lucky to have an engineer of his calibre on staff and I look forward to working with him in the future.”
Shane said: “This is totally unexpected, I was looking forward to taking part but I never thought I would do so well.
“I’d like to thank everyone that has helped me on my way to winning the competition. It’s a great feeling and to be recognised as the best in something I love doing makes it even more special.”
Shane is a former apprentice from NG Bailey’s highly acclaimed in-house apprenticeship academy and has been working for NG Bailey since he graduated.
The WorldSkills event takes place every two years, with Leipzig, Germany due to host the event in 2013.
