Question: I'm looking to replace the corridor lighting in blocks of flats. They need to be physically robust low energy units that can cope with PIR and/or three minute timed on-time.

Which technologies will cope with these short on-times, are cheap to buy, and have low running costs?

Answer: There's no easy answer to this - a compromise is likely.

Fluorescents are economical both in buying and running costs, but frequent switching and short operation per switch will reduce lamp and ballast life. The best performance in this application would be had from warm-start ballasts. These quickly pre-heat the electrodes, reducing the ignition voltage required and so the speed with which the lamps lose their emissive coating. They therefore increase the life of the lamp.

LEDs are comparatively expensive to buy, but running costs are low and they are well suited to frequent switching and short running times.

HID solutions are typically not suited to frequent switching because of the very high voltages required to ignite a still-warm lamp.
