Eaton has launched a major update to its intuitive and lightweight power management software, Intelligent Power® Software. Version 1.20 supports both redundant power supplies and parallel uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, making it an excellent tool for comprehensive monitoring and management of power device networks in a variety of today’s IT environments – ranging from everyday offices to the most critical, virtualised Tier 4 data centres.

Eaton’s Intelligent Power Software solution, based on Web-2.0 technology, includes two applications: Intelligent Power Manager for UPS and rack-based power distribution unit (Epdu’s) management and monitoring, and Intelligent Power Protector, which allows graceful shutdown of operating systems.
Intelligent Power Manager connects to leading virtual machine management systems, including VMware® vCenter™, Microsoft SCVMM™ and XenCenter™, integrating power management functions to these systems so that all UPS’s and ePDU’s in the virtual network can be viewed within the same application, together with information about the network, physical server and storage details. In case of a local power failure, it can also trigger virtual machine migration to another physical server or site.
“Today’s servers are typically powered by multiple supplies and protected by parallel UPS’s. This creates challenges for power management software, as it must be able to monitor and manage highly complex power networks and take appropriate actions to eliminate or minimise downtime in case of a power failure,” says Tatu Valjakka, Product Manager at Eaton Power Quality.
“The newest version of Intelligent Power Software was developed with this in mind. As it can manage redundant power systems, it is an ideal solution for the most critical IT environments with stringent requirements for power availability and reliability. Yet it is easy to use – the software scales flexibly from a simple single-computer, single-UPS configuration, to the most sophisticated high-availability environments.”
The software’s mass configuration capabilities make installation and maintenance easy, which minimises the effort required and benefits the bottom line. Eaton’s cost-effective Intelligent Power Software manages up to ten devices at no charge, with licenses for up to 100 devices – or even an unlimited number – also available.
Intelligent Power Software 1.20 will replace PowerVision as Eaton’s server shutdown solution for high-availability sites.
