Question: I need to upgrade an electric shower and have calculated that I need to use 16mm square cable. An existing conduit buried in the wall has little room for this 16mm twin & earth cable.
Would it be acceptable to strip the outer insulation layer and use the brown and blue cables separately, and use them with and appropriate earth wire?
Answer: Obviously this would normally be carried out using conduit wire (6491X).
For Prysmian cables, the insulated cores in the twin & earth cable (6242Y) have the same insulation material and thickness as the conduit wire. However, a conduit installation would normally use an insulated green yellow earth and not a bare earth. Also, great care would be required to strip the sheath from the twin & earth cable.
Prysmian does not represent an approval organisation, we suggest that you may want to contact the NICEIC (www.niceic.com). You can do this also through this Voltimum UK web portal.
