This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts. Question: I am about to wire a new property that has metal web joists. The joists themselves allow excellent access in order to run the wiring. The webs are all rounded off and when running the cables it is easy to stay away from the metal parts. However, do these cables have to be run within trunking to avoid contact with the metal web?
Answer: Are you using single or double insulated cable?
The Wiring Regulations state that single insulated cables need to be contained within trunking, but double insulated cables do not, so it all depends upon the cable you are installing.
