| SY cable buried in walls? |

This question, and thousands of others, have been answered by our Voltimum Experts on a daily basis in the Technical Expertise area. Question: RCD protection is now required for all non-mechanically protected cables buried in walls.
Is SY control cable (to BS 6500) suitable for this purpose, as it has a continuous metal screen and provides flexibility for ease of use compared with armoured cable for domestic applications?
Answer: Prysmian does not manufacture SY cable. We manufacture LSX Earth Shield to BS8436, which will satisfy 522.6.8 (1) and can therefore be installed without RCD protection to satisfy the regulation, provided it is used with the appropriate circuit breaker.
We can also provide independent verification that FP200 will satisfy the nail penetration test required in BS8436.
I was not aware that SY cable was made to a British Standard - however cables to BS6500 are not mentioned in 522.6.8(1) and are, therefore, not covered.
