Almost anything you need to know about the electrical industry can be found on Voltimum.co.uk – and in Lauren’s case she did. She found her electrician father.

Lauren wrote her story and submitted it into Voltimum’s ten year anniversary competition, as she wanted to thank Voltimum UK and Georgia for their help. And with a story this unbelievable, it’s no wonder Lauren won the iPad first prize.

The Winning Story

Voltimum Helped Me Find My Dad!

Almost a year ago to the day, I got an email from my dad - nothing particularly unusual about that for most people. For me this was the first contact I’d had with him since I was seven years old. Just 30 minutes before the email arrived, I had finally made the decision to try and track down my dad. I had Googled my dad's name and the word “electrician” - as I knew this was his profession.

I was at work and did not expect anything to come of this quick search. The Voltimum website appeared first in the search results, along with an old article from The Telegraph's website. I checked both of these links and found that a man with my dad's name had posted comments on these sites. I contacted both the Telegraph and Voltimum explaining my story and asking if they would pass on the email address of this person.

I received a swift and curt response from the Telegraph, letting me know that it was against their policy to give out this sort of information. Shortly after this, I received a much more helpful response from Georgia at Voltimum. Georgia told me that giving out their users' details is also against Voltimum's policy but if I wished, she could pass on my details to this user and leave it with him to contact me.

I did not believe that this could be my dad - private detectives had been hired to trace him in the past with no luck. I did not think that a quick, absent-minded search on Google was all it would take to trace him. I asked Georgia to pass on my details to this man, and soon got back to work and forgot all about it. Fifteen minutes (or less) later, I saw an email alert flash-up telling me I had received an email from a man with my dad's name. Without thinking I clicked on the alert and opened the email. It contained just one short, life-changing sentence: "Hi Lauren, Voltimum passed-on your message, if your D.O.B. is 10/06/82, mine is 15/01/59, then you are my daughter. Love Dad".

At this point, my life changed forever and just a month later I was sat in a cafe having a coffee in the sunshine, with my dad. We had lived just 5 miles away from each other since I had moved to London, 7 years before. The timing was incredible, I was about to leave the country for 7 months and he was about to move hundreds of miles away to the coast. To have found him and to be sat there with him just felt wonderful.

A year on and I have my dad back in my life and I owe a large part of this to Voltimum and in particular Georgia, who took the time to help me. Congratulations on 10 years!
