The Winning Story
Jon Dicken celebrates 10 years at Clarkson Evans
Our Head of Training, Jon Dicken, has celebrated 10 years as a member of the Clarkson Evans team. A lot has changed in this time and throughout the decade Jon has played a key role in developing the training centre into the thriving business it is today.
Back in April 2001 Jon joined a team of just three training staff who trained mainly apprentices and only around 100 paying customers each year. Now the 12-strong team welcomes around 1,500 delegates a year and delivers a wide range of electrical qualifications.
Jon commented on the highlights of his 10 years: Achieving Centre of Vocational Excellence status in 2003 was a major turning point, and being part of a team that’s won so many awards has been great. The most memorable thing has probably been my trip to Iraq in 2009 to deliver 17th Edition training.
Gloucester-based electrical contractor and training provider, Clarkson Evans, has weathered the storm of the recession and seen major expansion over the last twelve months. This looks set to continue and the company is rapidly establishing itself as one of the leading contractors in the country, now wiring one in 20 of all new homes built in the whole of the UK.
Started in 1981 as a ‘one-man band’ by current Managing Director, Steve Evans, Clarkson Evans now employs over 300 staff and has an annual turnover approaching £15 million. As well as the head office in Gloucester, there are eight other branches covering much of southern England, the Midlands and South Wales. The company specialises entirely in wiring brand new homes and its customers include all the major national house builders.
Clarkson Evans also runs a highly successful City & Guilds approved electrical training centre, welcoming around 1,500 delegates each year from a range of other employers. Originally set up as a small internal department, the centre now boasts some of the best electrical training facilities in the country.
Staff training is a key focus for Clarkson Evans. As well as employing around 35 young recruits every year to begin an apprenticeship scheme and offering around 30 places for external apprentices, the company runs regular short courses ranging from basic electrical awareness to inspection and testing and now solar photovoltaic installer training. Delegates travel from far and wide to benefit from the expertise and quality of training on offer.
