Question: Why is the disconnection time of an exterior bulkhead light required during the design stage of an installation?

Answer: The disconnection time for a final circuit with a rating not exceeding 32A, used to supply an exterior bulkhead luminaire, is required to be 0.4 seconds - see BS7671: 2008 Regulation 411.3.2.2. Also see Table 41.1.

The designer is responsible for the installation and is required to ensure that these disconnection times are complied with. This will - in turn - ensure that the circuit will be disconnected from the supply in the event of a fault of negligible impedance on that circuit.
