As electric vehicle ownership is expanding, there is a growing need to understand how to provide an adequate circuit for the necessary domestic vehicle charging unit.
When it comes to charging electric vehicles we have no specific requirements in the wiring regulations, however the on-site guide for amendment no 1 does provide some guidance, reflecting European regulations, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see these appear in the regs later, possibly as a special installation.
There are four vehicle charging modes prescribed in the European Guidance;
Mode 1 - slow charging from a regular electrical socket (single or 3-phase)
Mode 2 - slow charging from a regular socket but which equipped with some EV specific protection arrangement.
Mode 3 - slow or fast charging using a specific EV multi-pin socket with control and protection functions.
Mode 4 - fast charging using some special charger technology.
The subject of providing a suitable circuit is one of many topics covered in the new video "Domestic Distribution" produced by Navigator Productions and Schneider Electric. The video, which will be available on learninglounge.com, looks at the heart of a domestic installation, the consumer unit.
