A number of Arup lighting projects have received prestigious awards in recent weeks.

The Eleanor and Wilson Greatbatch Pavilion won an Award of Excellence from the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD). The top category in the highly regarded IALD awards program, the Award of Excellence was given to only six projects out of 189 submissions from around the world.

The Greatbatch Pavilion serves as a visitors' center and event space for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo, New York Martin House, now a museum. The pure form of the Toshiko Mori-designed building is reinforced by a thoughtful lighting scheme which preserves the ceiling’s clean, uninterrupted form by locating all fixtures elsewhere.

“The amount of respect in this project given to modern design and architectural form is commendable,” wrote one IALD judge. “Planar surfaces are left unmarred by lighting, and yet displays and objects within the space are highlighted appropriately. I don’t like to use the word ‘integrated’ too often, but this project clearly shows a ‘whole-team’ effort.”

The Greatbatch Pavilion also won an Award of Merit in the Illuminating Engineering Society’s 2011 Illumination Awards. Three other Arup projects, including Skanska’s US headquarters, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Holland Casino Rotterdam, also received the award.

The jury weighed projects against factors such as the complexity of the design problem, performance criteria achieved, energy and environmental design, and ease of maintenance.

The Skanska project, which created LEED® Platinum headquarters space in the Empire State Building, was designed to showcase the construction group’s sustainability credentials. Arup worked with architects Cook + Fox and Swanke Hayden Connell.

For the North Carolina Museum of Art, Arup worked with architect Thomas Phifer and Partners to provide an addition to an existing building. Arup’s daylighting design created uniform, controlled exposure for sensitive artwork via a sophisticated system of louvers, lenses and diffusing fabrics.

For Holland Casino Rotterdam, Arup worked with architects ICrave and Claessens Erdmann to integrate the lighting design into the architecture, giving light a key role in defining the character of different spaces. Separate lighting schemes for ‘work’ and ‘play’ have lowered total energy use while improving light levels for cleaning and maintenance.
