Question: I have recently designed a new lighting scheme for a client in which we have proposed using T5 luminaires with electronic ballasts to replace T12 luminaires using switch start ballasts.

In order to advise the client about energy savings, we are looking to carry out a simple calculation on the new lighting compared with the existing. However, we are unable to obtain information regarding losses through the T12 control gear.

Is it possible for you to give us guidance on this so we can accurately advise the client of the possible energy savings accordingly?

Answer: The system wattage for a single 75W T12 lamp with magnetic gear should be approximately 91W.
