With the current trend towards using smartphones both in offices and on construction sites, cable manufacturer, Draka, has become the first company in the cables industry to embrace the technology and make cable information accessible as an iPhone application, available on the iTunes App Store. Plans are also well advanced to launch an android app for other smartphones.
Mirroring the easy-to-use functionality of the company’s UK website, the new app is a cable sizing calculator that enables installers to identify precise cable specifications in a matter of seconds. The desired cable, phase of the supply, whether it is single or multi-core and if the cable is to be buried can all can be selected. The app then moves on to installation method and cable grouping, before requiring boxes to be filled in with the remaining cable requirement data. The precise cable specification is then displayed on the iPhone screen.

Commenting on what the company sees as a significant step forward in customer support, Mark Froggatt, Draka’s Marketing Services Manager, says: “We believe we have a responsibility to installers to make essential information as easily and consistently accessible as possible.
