Eaton has introduced a range of Type B, 200A final distribution boards with integral smart metering for power and lighting. This enables specifiers and installers to meet the energy metering requirements of the Building Regulations Part L2 cost-effectively without having to install separate distribution boards and feeders for each type of load:
The sub-metering requirements of
Part L2, apply to all new and refurbished non-domestic buildings greater than 500m2 and call for energy sub-metering so that at least 90% of the estimated annual energy consumption can be assigned to specific end-use categories such as lighting, heating, pumps and fans. Traditionally,
final distribution boards supply both lighting and small power loads.
Eaton's new smart, split-metered distribution boards are suitable for three-phase or single-phase applications as standard and provide for separate measurement of lighting and small power grouped loads. Installation of the boards is simple; the metering and 200A switch disconnector incomer are completely pre-installed at the factory, allowing the installer to focus on outgoing circuit requirements. The distribution boards are offered in four sizes from 10 to 24 TPN ways. Meters are multi-function, MID-compliant instruments incorporating either pulsed output or RS485 connectivity where required.
Smart meter incorporated:
The innovative feature of this solution is the smart 'summing' meter, which calculates and displays net values of electrical parameters for each section of the board plus total load, without the need for further external calculations. Having this net information available directly from the meter simplifies integration with any energy surveillance system.
The design uses orthodox high-integrity shrouded busbars with embedded transducers. A single 15kA fault rated main busbar offers greater assurance of integrity compared with partially soft-cabled solutions. The embedded transducers deliver a significant reduction in board size, compared with standard current transformer based solutions, making these power and lighting boards the most compact metered solutions available.
'High integrity earths' for ring circuits and 'functional clean earths are now commonplace requirements, so earthing is an important consideration. The new boards incorporate additional high integrity earths as standard; they have four earth bars. An accessory kit is supplied with each board facilitating a variety of earthing options and a single phasing option.
Removable side gland plates offer a choice of cabling options.
Four different board sizes are offered as follows:
- 6 + 4 TPN ways
- 8 + 6 TPN ways
- 10 + 8 TPN ways
- 14 + 10 TPN ways.
In each case there is a meter option offering pulsed kWh information or RS485 communication for connection to an energy surveillance system. Both meter types offer kWh measurement plus the provision to read other parameters such as line voltage, current, power factor and maximum demand on the display or via the RS485 option
These smart split-metered distribution boards are part of a comprehensive line-up of Eaton distribution boards and meter packs designed to help specifiers and contractors meet modern needs for energy metering in cost-effective ways. The range also includes Type A (single-phase) distribution boards with integral single or dual-channel meters; meter packs for installation with standard Type A or Type B (three-phase) distribution boards and a special twin meter pack for use with two Memshield 2 Type B distribution boards fed by a single feeder. Metering options are also available with Eaton MCCB panelboards, where rapid installation wiring looms speed installation of the CT connections to the meter.
This combination of potential metering solutions provides a flexible approach, offering the installer the capability of delivering metering requirements at the most convenient locations in a building.
