Mace has been appointed as the design and build contractor to deliver the new London cable car scheme that will span the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks.

The appointment adds another project to Mace’s portfolio of iconic London schemes that already includes the Shard and London Bridge Quarter, The Tate Modern Project, The British Museum North West Development, and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as part of the Olympic Delivery Authority’s Delivery Partner, CLM.

Mace’s legacy to the city also includes the London Eye, British Museum Great Court and numerous commercial developments, including the Mayor’s current home – City Hall.

“This will be an incredibly exciting new river crossing for London and we are really proud to be involved”, said Mark Reynolds, Mace’s deputy chief executive.

“London’s cable car project is an awe-inspiring addition to our London portfolio of work. Mace thrives on challenging and innovative schemes and we are delighted that Transport for London has trusted Mace to deliver this fantastic project.”

The cable car scheme will involve stretching 50 millimeter steel cables over one kilometre across the Thames from the Greenwich Peninsula at The O2 to the Royal Docks at ExCeL. The cables will be strung between steel towers 90 metres high and will carry 34 cars, each capable of carrying 10 passengers.

Mace will be working with world-class partners, including Doppelmayr, a world leader in cable car manufacture; Watson Steel, part of the Severfield Rowen Group, the largest specialist steel contractor in the UK; URS Scott Wilson, lead consultant; Buro Happold, structural engineer; and architects Aedas on design.
