NG Bailey’s maintenance division has said ‘You’re hired!’ to its latest intake of apprentices – upholding a tradition for investing in the engineers of the future that stretches back more than 40 years.
The latest apprentices will develop their skills through a unique blend of classroom studies and extensive practical experience, site visits and regular mentoring.
Against a tough economic backdrop, this year saw more than 4,000 school and college leavers apply for around 50 places on the annual apprenticeship programme run by NG Bailey.
One of the key strengths of the scheme is the company’s own purpose-built engineering academy in Leeds, which has been the springboard for the careers of some 5,000 apprentices since it first opened its doors in 1969. Many have gone on to take key roles within the construction industry, with a number still forming an important part of NG Bailey today.
It was the reputation of the academy, which is a Centre for Vocational Excellence, which prompted new apprentice Nathan Waters’ determination to be accepted.
He said: “Carrying out my apprenticeship in such a one-to-one environment means I gain on-site and hands-on experience, which is unlike a traditional classroom course which is predominantly about theory.
He added: “The coaching and mentoring we receive is first-rate. Stuart Linington, the managing director of the maintenance arm, meets with us to check on our progress and to ensure we continue to prosper – even arranging additional training elements such as visits to specialist client sites.”
Stuart commented: “My first job was as an apprentice and it gave me a strong grounding. I learned a lot - it offered a rare insight into the world of building maintenance. It has been my career - and passion – ever since.
“I take a personal interest in the apprenticeship scheme because the benefit to the apprentices, and also to us as a business is invaluable.
“They receive comprehensive training and qualifications – and we gain a committed and loyal individual who will deliver top-quality services for our clients.”
Bailey Maintenance’s expanding portfolio encompasses the provision of maintenance services to clients as wide-ranging as rail stations to flagship commercial offices; supermarkets to government agencies; high street fashion houses to police forces.
