Question: I'm carrying out a new electrical installation with a three-phase system that has an existing three-phase distribution board, but the cost of replacing all the MCBs with RCBOs is quite scary - so the client has requested that we change it for a single-phase distribution board.
This can be done as each separate phase goes into a distribution point first, as it is feeding flats upstairs.
I understand that phases should always be balanced, but where do I stand on the three-phase meter? Will it need to be changed to three individual ones, or will it still work on the one phase?
Answer: A three-phase meter can provide three individual phase supplies through some adaption to the distribution system using - for example - a three-phase main switch or Henley blocks etc, thus still balancing the load over three phases. This would allow each distribution board to be single-phase and, perhaps, of a split-load configuration.
