The Metropolitan Housing Trust was crowned Carbon Champion of the Year for a refurbishment programme that has seen dramatic results in reducing carbon emissions, at the CIBSE 2011 Building Performance Awards.
Rewarding excellence in sustainable and aspirational buildings, the CIBSE Building Performance awards are designed to raise industry standards by recognising those who are designing and managing the UK’s most sustainable and innovative projects & products. They showcase the best examples of actual low carbon performance in practice, allied to excellence in the design, construction, and operation of buildings of all types.
“The standard of entries this year has been excellent and the range of organisations entering more varied than ever before,” said Rob Manning, CIBSE President.
Atelier Ten Limited was named Consultancy of the Year, while Ernest Griffiths took the accolade for Refurbishment Project of the Year, for a refurbishment project transforming a poorly performing 1960s office building into a modern, efficient and sustainable working environment. JPW Construction beat off the competition to win New Build Project of the Year for Canolfan Hyddgen in Machynlleth, Wales, the first non-domestic certified Passivhaus office building in the UK.
Metropolitan Housing Trust took the prize for Client of the Year- public sector. Client of the Year – Large was won by London’s Better Buildings Partnership.
Product of the Year went to Laing O’Rourke/BDP for their product range of facades and frame solutions, while the Energy-Using Product was won by the Zehnder Carboline Radiant Heating and Cooling Panel. ABS Consulting was recognised for its contribution to Training for Building Performance and British Land won for Building Operation. EDP Consulting Limited was awarded Commissioning Project of the Year and the awards for Integrated Project Team went to Hoare Lea.
CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor David Grace took the title of Low Carbon Consultant of the Year for his work in saving carbon.
CIBSE President Rob Manning said: “All the winners recognised have shown their commitment to creating a sustainable built environment. We are proud to showcase some of the best projects, products and innovations and urge all of our winners and runners up to continue their efforts to further raise the profile of the construction and engineering industry.”
The CIBSE Building Performance Awards were presented on 9 February 2011 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
