Question: With regard to medium voltage (MV) cable, we normally use an end termination kit for the termination in a motor/transformer/feeder. But why it is necessary to use such an end termination kit? What are the purposes of such a kit?

Answer: The reason is as follows - so that the cable can be installed on to the equipment (e.g. transformer), the distance between the conductor and the semi-conducting screen must be increased, to prevent it from flashing over. The high stress at the end of the semi-conducting screen must be controlled to prevent electrical failure of the cable in this region.

A termination is a device that controls the stress and prevents tracking over the surface of the insulation.
