ABB has created a new lighting energy audit service aimed at helping companies find new ways to reduce their energy consumption through the latest lighting control technology.

Even with the recent Government amendments to the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme introduced earlier this year, organisations that find ways to reduce their energy consumption still stand to reap substantial rewards in the form of lower taxes on their emissions.

Intelligent lighting control is one way to achieve this. Using a combination of sensing elements (presence detectors, light sensors etc) and control equipment (actuators), intelligent lighting control can deliver the following benefits:

• Energy savings of up to 60%
• Automatic control of lighting levels in different areas of the building
• Presence-based lighting control, with lighting activated only when rooms are occupied
• Improved use of natural lighting

Moreover in installations worldwide, the savings achieved by the technology have typically resulted in a return on investment of less than two years.

How can intelligent lighting control save you energy and money?

The energy saving potential of intelligent lighting controls can be shown in the following example.

An office building with 3,000 conventional 72W lamps has its lights switched on for 15 hours per day. Over the course of one year, the lamps will use 777,600 KW, costing around £54,000 and emitting around 334 tonnes of carbon.

Replacing this with an intelligent automatic lighting control system would reduce the number of operational hours to 9.5, cutting annual energy use by 334,368KW. This would save around £23,000 per year and cut carbon emissions by around 122 tonnes.

Take your first steps towards intelligent lighting control

ABB can help you identify whether your site is suitable for intelligent lighting control and the potential amount of energy you could save by guiding you through a simple series of steps, namely:

1. Scope of Supply – Our trained engineers will meet with you to discuss the benefits, requirements and input needed for a successful energy appraisal of your existing building controls system
2. Data Collection – An on-site appraisal is undertaken, involving extensive analysis of selected applications
3. Data Analysis – The findings from the appraisal are analysed and any potential savings identified
4. Recommendation – An action plan is prepared, containing an executive summary and a detailed engineer’s report, highlighting the area(s) where the greatest energy savings could be achieved
5. Implementation – The appraisal findings are implemented and the actual energy savings and emissions reductions are monitored alongside the predicted results
6. Training – We can provide any training needed to ensure that your energy saving system is running properly and that you’re fully equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills
7. Specify – By specifying and standardising on ABB’s proven i-bus KNX intelligent building controls, you can be assured that the predicted energy savings will be achieved
