Question: We have a theatre auditorium lit by 24 PAR38 100W lamps in recessed downlighter fittings controlled by an Anytronics DMX dimmer. For theatre use, it is essential that the lighting goes out and in without any significant 'plop'. Our one experiment a year or so ago with an LED lamp was not successful as the lamp suddenly went out at about 20% and came back on equally suddenly.

Is there a suitable PAR38 replacement that can be dimmed smoothly in and out? Any suggestions, other than replacing the ceiling, would be gratefully received.

Answer: In my role as a Technical Advisor in lighting, I have not come across reports of a PAR38 that is reliably dimmable. Also, while we do have an LED PAR38 in the market, it is not rated as dimmable.

I cannot in good conscience suggest you experiment, considering the expense involved! I would, instead, suggest that you wait until a dimmable PAR38 LED lamp is launched by a reputable company that will support the claim of dimmability with a refund or aftersales support to ensure that you are not left out of pocket.
