Inviron, the leading building services and facilities management provider, has been working with international engineering and construction group, Costain, to facilitate Manchester Airport’s Westgate security-point upgrade project.
The recently completed project, to improve airside access to the western area of the airfield for vehicles and staff, involved the re-siting of the security lodge and fitting a new barrier system. Inviron installed a number of M&E services including: emergency and general lighting; power supplies; CCTV; fire alarms; air conditioning; domestic water systems and new toilets to the building.
Inviron’s operations manager, Jason Hanson, says: “This kind of project requires precise planning to ensure there is minimal disruption to airport operations, whilst also making sure that security is not compromised at any time.”
Guy Wooley, framework manager at Costain, says: “It’s quite a challenge to upgrade, whilst maintaining, a live airfield security facility as there are client protocols and processes that cannot be affected in any way. Every project is individual, and we’ve worked very closely with the airport’s stakeholders to ensure that the works are planned extremely carefully and carried out to exacting standards.”
David Haimes, Head of Projects for Manchester Airports Group, said: “Security is paramount to the safety of our passengers, employees and for the successful operation of our four airports. We are delighted with the improvement works to the airside access points at Manchester, which will greatly speed up the process without compromising safety. For such a complex project it is impressive that the contractors have finished on time, with all works completed to a high standard and in line with our sustainability targets.”
