The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the single housing and regeneration agency for England investing in communities, has confirmed £14.8m funding to provide approximately 390 new homes to be started this financial year in Essex. £1.2m of which will be invested in Basildon.

Projects are being enabled across the county of Essex, funded from the National Affordable Housing Programme (NAHP), which the HCA manages. More than half the schemes that will receive funding are located within the Thames Gateway regeneration area of Basildon, Southend and Thurrock, with a total investment of £7.6m. The rest are spread across the county and in total will provide homes for approximately 1387 people on the housing needs list.

For Basildon, investment totals £1.2m and will deliver 37 homes at Laindon High Road housing 164 people. The Homes are part of the second phase of the development being developed by Bellway. The scheme provides high quality housing with a range of tenures, which is reflected in the high levels of resident satisfaction.

The original development is built on old school sold to the developer by Essex County Council. The affordable housing element being funded is 30% of the total scheme. Family Mosaic have worked closely with Basildon Council to work up a tenure mix that meets the housing need of Basildon.

Naisha Polaine, Head of Area for the HCA in the East of England said: "This is positive news for both local residents and our partners in Basildon; Basildon District Council and, in this instance, Family Mosaic. The £1.2m over the next three years will enable new homes to be built which in turn will address the housing needs of Essex."

"The homes at Laindon High Road will be a mix of shared ownership and social rented. The housing needs register in Basildon is more than 3000 people*, and this further investment will go some way to supporting that need."

Naisha Polaine continues: "Through our investment and skills we have been able to help local authorities meet the needs and aspirations of their communities. We are in uncertain times with a recovering economy and housebuilding industry, however, we will continue to support partners the best we can working in a practical, flexible and innovative way to bring together local investment, and maximise impact and value for money. It's important that we secure the best possible value for public funds, more so now that ever before."

All bids were assessed for quality, strategic fit, value for money and deliverability. A summary of schemes being supported in Essex via Local Authority Areas are as follows:

- Basildon; 37 homes, 164 people housed
