The Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) gets underway next month as 995 properties in Burnley, Lancashire, will receive retrofits to reduce homeowner's energy bills.

British Gas will install solid wall insulation, new boilers, draught proofing and loft top ups to the flats and houses belonging to Calico Homes, as well as provide home energy advice packs to all residents.

It forms part of a £350 million government scheme to transform 90,000 homes for low income residents to benefit from reduced energy bills through better insulation and other measures.

Of the £350 million, British Gas will contribute £70 million towards the initiative, as well as funds from other energy suppliers.

The utility company will also be retrofitting other properties across the UK before the end of the year through the scheme.

Gearoid Lane, managing director of communities and new energy at the firm, said of the project: "It is a great example of the community, local housing provider and council in these areas working together with British Gas to make people's homes warmer and more energy efficient."
