Question: I am wondering if there is a regulation stating that earth bars within a distribution board must be linked if both are being used. Would regulation 542.3.2 cover this query?

Answer: It is seen as good practice, and frequently carried out, to ensure the electrical continuity of switchgear, please see Regulation 543.2.4 (i).

However, distribution board manufactures may advise that it is NOT necessary to link earth bars as they are already sufficiently connected via the case of the enclosure. In this instance, continuity is achieved as each individual earth bar is fastened to the case via an earthing strap, and hence to each other via the case. Also see Regulation 511.1.
