Question: When testing an emergency lighting circuit, does the test need to isolate all of the circuit so that only the emergency fittings operate, or does the test only need to operate the emergency fittings leaving the normal lighting on? Or can either method be used?

Answer: You only need to test the functionality of the emergency lighting, so it is acceptable to test the emergency luminaires whilst the mains lighting in the same area is still illuminated.

Obviously, the emergency lighting should be monitoring the circuit providing mains lighting to the space.
