For the first time in 20 years, East Devon District Council is literally ‘breaking new ground’, with 17 council homes being built in the area.
Work to build new homes in the district is now underway, with nine under construction on land owned by the Council in Churchill Court, Lympstone, and more being built in Waggs Plot and Heal’s Field in Axminster.
These much needed schemes have been supported with an investment of more than £1 million from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), through its for Local Authority New Build (LANB) programme, which gives Councils the support to deliver affordable housing solutions in their own communities. Matched funding for the development has been provided by the Council.
Partners have marked the start of work at Lympstone at an event with local MP Hugo Swire and the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Councillor Jill Elson.
Councillor Elson said: “It is many years since the Council was in a position to build its own homes and I am delighted that this building programme is now under way.
'Thanks to the funding from the Homes and Communities Agency, and the further £1 million contribution from EDDC, we are now able to help families move into homes that they can afford.'
Colin Molton, HCA Director with responsibility for investment in the South West, said: 'This development is providing much needed, high quality affordable housing in East Devon as part of our drive to increase provision across the South West.'
'All partners have worked hard to bring these new homes to fruition for local people and we can all be very proud of what we have achieved here.'
