Question: Is there any regulation in British Standards that allows, or does not allow, smoke detector installation in generator rooms? I ask, as our designer has specified an FM200 system for generator rooms, and it includes heat and smoke detectors. I believe that in such generator rooms, smoke can cause to false alarms. Is there any standard related to this issue. In BS 5839, it is not allowed to install smoke detectors in the kitchens.

Answer: Smoke detectors should be avoided if possible in that kind of area. Heat or photo-thermal detectors would be a better alternative.
