Support services and construction company Carillion’s sponsorship of The Wildlife Trusts has reached a major milestone with the funds donated to date topping £300,000.

Over the past ten years Carillion has been supporting the voluntary organisation, with annual donations through its Natural Habitats Fund and additional fundraising and volunteering by employees to help The Wildlife Trusts’ essential habitat and conservation work.

The scheme enables the 47 Wildlife Trusts across the country to apply for a grant to fund their biodiversity work projects. It encourages links between Carillion projects to work with their local Wildlife Trust to improve nature conservation within the locality of a Carillion contract or office.

Amphibians in Birmingham, water voles in London, otters in Suffolk, Staffordshire heathland and dunes in Lancashire are just a small sample of the flora and fauna which have benefited from the scheme over the years.

The latest cheque for £35,000 will be handed over to The Wildlife Trust on Wednesday (May 5) at Highgate Common, near Wombourne, where Carillion has worked with the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to clear land to encourage heather and other heathland plants to re-colonise to benefit wildlife.

As well as representatives from Carillion and The Wildlife Trusts, BBC’s The One Show nature presenter Mike Dilger, who is originally from Staffordshire, will also be attending the cheque presentation and to witness first-hand how some of the money has been put to good in use in projects such as Highgate Common.

Commenting on the latest donation, Don Kenny, Carillion executive director with responsibility for sustainability said: “The Natural Habitats scheme has proved to be a very successful partnership for both Carillion and The Wildlife Trusts and the many projects which have benefited from its funds over the past 10 years.

“The scheme is an integral part of Carillion’s wider sustainability policy and demonstrates our commitment to being an environmentally and socially responsible business.”

Guy Corbett-Marshall, chief executive of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust said: “Our partnership with Carillion is an immensely valuable resource that has benefited dozens of Wildlife Trusts projects right across the country.

“Over the years the money has been used for practical and promotional activities, supporting staff and volunteers and in projects that benefit biodiversity in their regions.”
