A 50% reduction in the amount of energy consumed by the lighting at the head office of Ipswich Building Society is the projected outcome of a new lighting scheme using intelligent luminaires manufactured by Cooper Lighting.

Located in the town’s Ransomes Europark development, the head office had previously been equipped with 4 x 36W switch-start Category 2 modular fittings. When the lighting was refurbished, these were replaced by Cooper’s Intellect Digital Combiform Plus semi-recessed luminaires, which use a combination of direct and indirect illumination to create a high-quality lit environment.

To achieve maximum energy efficiency, the new luminaires provide occupancy-detection and daylight-monitoring facilities and can be linked together in programmable zones to suit the needs of staff working in the building.

In addition, the luminaires are equipped with 4000K triphosphor compact fluorescent lamps, high-frequency dimmable control gear and Cooper’s ‘plug and play’ Connect Wiring System, which makes connection of the mains power to the luminaires quick and easy.

The new lighting scheme is inherently much more efficient than the previous generation of luminaires, and it also delivered immediate energy savings by reducing the total number of fittings required by almost 10%.

In recognition of its effectiveness, the new lighting scheme was highly commended in the Indoor Workplace category of the Lighting Industry Federation’s 2009 Energy Management and Innovation in Lighting Award Scheme (EMILAS).

All installation work was carried out by Ipswich-based electrical contractor Robert Forsdike Ltd.
