Question: What is the necessary IP rating for luminaires used in kitchens?
Answer: The Food Safety Act1990 applies and the CIBSE code for lighting states the following:
'Luminaires should be constructed so that no part of the luminaire can fall into foodstuffs, even when the luminaire is open for lamp changing. The luminaires should be capable of being washed or hosed down in safety. Lamps suitable for operation at low temperatures will be necessary for some food storage areas. Lamps and luminaires suitable for hot and humid conditions may be required for some other areas.'
It is clear from the above extract that the luminaires should be adequately IP rated - this is especially determined by the task performed in that application (hot or cold kitchen), hence luminaire manufacturers' generally will have a range suitable for that type of application.
Philips Lighting's UK division exited the indoor fluorescent market in April 2009 in order to concentrate on LED solutions, so we no longer supply indoor fluorescent fittings and cannot recommend a Philips luminaire for this application in this instance.
