The re-development of Gateshead Leisure Centre is part of Gateshead Council's £29m Building an Active Future programme.
The work will bring a new gym, poolside sauna and steam rooms, new changing facilities, cafe and entrance plus upgrading of swimming pools and many other facilities.
The leisure centre has been selected as a potential site for an Olympic training camp in 2012.
