More than 20,000 extra affordable homes, including the largest proportion of family sized units in the last decade, have been delivered in London despite the economic downturn, the Mayor of London revealed today (14 January) confirming that he remains on track to deliver 50,000 affordable homes by 2012 - more than in any other single Mayoral term.
The Mayor, who is currently investing over £1bn a year through the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), was speaking at the Gallon Close development in Charlton where he was welcoming new residents into their homes.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “It is testament to the dedication and determination of City Hall, London’s boroughs, and the Homes and Communities Agency that, despite the huge financial maelstroms we’ve had to navigate through, we are on track to deliver more affordable homes in London today than a decade ago.
“These 20,000 homes will change forever the lives of thousands of Londoners. But let’s be very clear, this is just the beginning. There is a huge need for affordable housing in London that we simply must meet if we are to retain our position as one of the best cities in the world to live and work.
“Before the Olympics we will have delivered 50,000 affordable homes and work is already under way to identify and fund developments that will see this momentum continue well into the decade.”
Brendan Sarsfield Chief Executive of Family Mosaic, the housing association managing the Gallon Close project, said: “We are very proud of these high quality homes and the 900 other homes we have built in London in the last 12 months. More homes are desperately needed in the capital but to us it is also critical that we build homes people want and that add value to local communities.”
