Q & A of the Day - Why are my mains fire-rated downlighters so dim?

Question: I have recently installed JCC Fire guard mains downlighters in a new installation, and the light given off them is very disappointing. They came complete with OSRAM 50W lamps and the light given off seems almost as if it was dimmed. It also produces a shadow on the wall about two feet from the ceiling.
I need to find out if it is the type of fitting (fire rated) that is causing the poor lighting, and what else is available.

I have wired for 18 fittings in the kitchen and am concerned about the lighting levels as they need to be right.

Answer: A mains rated halogen lamp will produce approximately half the light output compared to a low voltage halogen lamp. For example, a 240V 50W GU10 will produce about 950cd - whilst a 12V 50W dichroic will produce 2200cd. Of course, with the mains rated halogen type you have the convenience of not using a transformer.

Also please check that the supply voltage is 240V. If it is less, then you will have reduced light output.
