Question: When replacing consumer units in domestic dwellings, why is it necessary to upgrade the earth bond to the water, gas, or other incoming services? In many cases, this is very expensive and can cause a great deal of upheaval to the property. It has also stopped a lot of people having the work carried out.

Answer: The installation of a replacement consumer unit in a dwelling must comply with the current edition of BS 7671: 2008 (the 17th Edition), and the installer must verify the following:
  • That the main earthing terminal is connected to an adequate means of earthing.
  • That the main equipotential bonding is adequate in order to comply.
