Ofsted chief inspector, Christine Gilbert, said some VLE's were being used more as “dumping grounds or storage places for rarely-used files, rather than for material that enhanced the face-to-face learning done inside the classroom”.
Great e-learning can be used effectively in conjunction with classroom based learning by allowing learners to reinforce their routine work, extend on topics discussed in class or catch up on missed lessons.
The director of learning and skills at Ofsted said take up of VLE's had been slower than hoped partly because teachers may not have had sufficient encouragement from their managers, had not been trained to use the online classrooms and, frequently, could not spare the time to keep the VLE up to date and post materials on it.
Terry Brown, Managing Director of Navigator Productions, owners of learninglounge.com had this to say;
"During visits to colleges over the last year, we have had many responses in regards to different virtual learning environments. The primary issue we've encountered is that VLE's only provide an empty framework and the content is left to hard pressed lecturers to create and administer.
Learninglounge.com provides an off the shelf solution for electro-technical e-Learning. Lecturers and learners can log in, search by topic and gain access to relevant material. There is no need for tutors across the UK to spend hours replicating each others work producing content, learninglounge.com has already got some of the best in the business.
Learninglounge.com is designed to support both classroom teaching and personalised learning. Quite simply, it’s not e-learning for the sake of e-learning, it’s e-learning that works!"
“It’s been a few weeks since we invested in Learninglounge.com and it’s been a rip roaring success”
