Question: Everywhere, it seems that we only calculate the voltage drop on the supply live cable to ensure that it does not exceed the laid down limits.
Technically, the total voltage drop at the load would be the sum of the voltage drop in the supply cable and the voltage drop in the return cable. Am I missing something?
Answer: Appendix 4 in BS7671: 2008 (the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations) states that the values of voltage drop are given for a value of 1A for a metre run, and represents the results of the voltage drop in all the circuit conductors.
Please look at Appendix 4 of BS7671: 2008 for a more detailed explanation.
