Question: Is there any insulation, other than polystyrene, which could have an effect of breaking down the PVC protection on cables?

Answer: Damage is possible but not documented.

Expanded polystyrene is known to have an effect on PVC insulated cables, caused by the softening of the insulation by residual chemicals in the insulation. The same sort of degradation is theoretically possible with other insulation materials, but no such cases have been brought to BASEC's attention.

Communications from insulation manufacturers to BASEC has stated that other insulation materials are not known to cause cable damage. More research is needed on this topic, which BASEC plans to undertake.
