Question: I've recently come across an installation that has a two-phase mains supply which feeds a three-phase distribution board, marked with the old colours R,Y,B.

If I re-mark this distribution board to reflect the actual phases R,Y,R (or L1,L2,L1 with the new system), would a two-phase supply be acceptable - or should I request a three-phase supply from the supply company?

Answer: It is acceptable to use a two-phase supply, but the conductors should be marked, as you are suggesting, to clearly identify them.
