Wilts, the largest independent electrical wholesaler, has been awarded a Parliamentary Citizenship Award in recognition of the work that Wilts has done with the Sportsmatch Community Programme.
The award is presented in conjunction with the All Party Parliamentary Rugby Group.
Wilts worked alongside Bath Rugby on a 2 year Sportsmatch programme to deliver curriculum based rugby coaching with a competition base open to all girls from 7-17 years old across BANES and West Wiltshire. The programme has achieved record results in schools involving 1800 girls in local secondary schools, 900 girls in local primary schools, and 400 hours coaching in total over both years.
Highlights from the programme included 2 girls from Wellsway School who had never played any rugby before taking part in the Wilts Rugby Programme in November last year, have now made their debut for Bath Rugby Girls’ Development Squad U15s on April 17th - only 5 months after picking up a rugby ball for the first time. A small example of how successful the project has been.
David Purdon, managing director of Wilts commented, “We are delighted to win this award. It comes after 2 years of us working directly with Bath Rugby to ensure that more girls in school gain access to rugby. I’m delighted that Wilts has played a part in bringing this fantastic sport into the lives of more children, encouraging them to try rugby and stay healthy. We’ve been thrilled at how enthusiastic the girls have been, and how we have already had some great successes from it.”
