Health and safety should not be seen as the "nation's pet joke" but as an important means of improving business performance, it has been claimed.
Rob Strange, chief executive of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), said that those who knock safety often forget the fact that 229 people died last year as a result of workplace accidents.
"There are many more deaths, serious injuries and cases of ill-health at work than silly risk-averse decisions we continue to read about in the press," he commented.
Mr Strange was speaking following the launch of the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) new Be Part of the Solution campaign.
Research released by the HSE revealed that 90 per cent of businesses see people as their most important asset.
Meanwhile, 65 per cent of employees said that having effective health and safety processes at in the workplace helps to make them feel valued.
