Engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has been appointed lead designer on the world’s first carbon neutral zero waste city, Masdar.
Masdar is a planned city, currently being built by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. The city was designed by Foster + Partners and will use entirely renewable energy sources.
Ian Clarke, Mott MacDonald’s Middle East managing director, said the win meant a lot to the firm, and to their Abu Dhabi staff in particular.
“We are thrilled that Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company has chosen us to assist on Masdar," said Clarke, "our appointment enables us to consolidate our profile as world leaders in the field of sustainability and furthermore help place Abu Dhabi at the centre of sustainable development.”
A feature of the design is a Personal Rapid Transport system (PRT) which will run on renewable energy and play a fundamental role as cars will be banned from the city.
