Question: I recently attended to a burned-out main isolator on a TP&N 100A distribution board. Sadly, the screws had not been tightened properly. Luckily I had a direct connection kit for this board and managed an effective repair until I obtained a new isolator switch. This board is mounted alongside the main panel board, which - of course - has an MCB feeding the affected distribution board.

So, do I need to fit a new switch - as there is suitable isolation right next to it?

Answer: I say that this is down to personal choice. In the vast majority of instances though, my experience tells me that users would have the additional incomer switch fitted within the MCB board (even despite the close proximity of the MCCB panelboard feeding it). Local regulations may also have some say in what you do - best to check.
