Do you have a burning issue you'd like to discuss on Voltimum and to your industry peers? Get it off your chest and give us an email. This month's letter is from electrician, John Adams.
I recently took and failed the 17th edition. The reason I failed was I ran out of time. In an attempt to gain a high pass mark, I was diligent and thorough. This was my downfall. Had I simply guessed (educated guessed) I would have passed. This was well founded by those who with no electrical ability or experience passed the exam. Now these same people will be out purporting to be electricians and being a danger to themselves and others.
The passing of exams, for some will never prove the true professional ability. Yes I am bitter, simply because I always take the time to do it safely and properly. If I do sit the exam again with what I know, and from educated guessing I will pass. But with all these latest course and exam fees I am having to fork out, I feel conned. Maybe I should just do what all the other good experienced electricians are doing. Not taking the courses or exams, let all the others do the courses and exams. Get the job on the strength of their recently gained achievements, get the sack, as they do. While we that can do the job simply await the emergency rescue call, from the employers. This is the reason many good mature electricians are leaving the industry.
One old electrician I know, was recently asked by an agency person,"Do you have your 17th edition?"
He replied, "Darling I've got the 1st". He then hung up.
That's it, I'm getting out of the game.
John.
