A new electric bike, being promoted as an environmentally-friendly alternative to petrol-powered motorbikes, has been launched in London.
With growing numbers of businesses and private users now turning to electric cars in a bid to cut back on fuel emissions as well as running costs, Zero Motorcycles is confident that its product will prove to be a hit among consumers looking to do both of these things, but with the added dimension of speed.
According to the company's founder and chief technology officer, Neal Saki, the eco-friendly bikes are capable of accelerating from zero to 50mph in just five seconds, with this aided by the lightweight aluminium frame and a light battery pack, which boasts a maximum range of 60 miles per charge.
He added, in an interview with the BBC: "Although there is some pollution associated with the production of electricity, a Zero motorcycle produces less than an eighth of the CO2 pollution per mile at the power plant than a petrol-powered motorcycle."
Meanwhile, transport bosses in London are considering a new speed-control system for taxis in order to cut carbon emissions.
