One-in-five construction sites failed health and safety checks during the Health and Safety Executive’s national March blitz on refurbishment schemes, the safety regulator has revealed.

During the month, inspectors visited 1,759 projects to check on how 2,145 contractors were complying with regulations.

The HSE said on almost 350 sites “sufficiently serious risks” were discovered to warrant enforcement action. A total of 500 notices were issued in total.

New chief construction inspector Phillip White said he was disappointed by the “level of disregard for basic health and safety standards”.

He added: “While any improvement has to be welcomed, our inspectors still found practices so far below the acceptable standard that they felt it necessary to take enforcement action on one in five sites. This is still very worrying.”

The HSE said work at height issues had remained a serious concern, with over half of notices issued done so over dangerous practices in this area.
