Meeting carbon targets 'requires energy efficiency'

05.05.2009

Tougher energy efficiency measures are needed in the UK in order for the country to meet its target of an 80 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.

That's according to a new report from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), which found that working harder towards energy efficiency could prepare consumers for the elimination of oil use.

It added that energy efficiency was the most cost-effective way to support the UK in reducing emissions as it would also help Britons to cut down on their energy costs.

Professor Jim Skea, research director at UKERC, said: "UK energy policy goals are extraordinarily ambitious. Meeting them will require efforts well beyond the bounds of historical experience.

"By looking at the energy system in the round, our researchers have shown not only that the goals can be met but that it is possible to reconcile them with wider technological, social and environmental changes."
