The Insurance Clinic question is answered by Trade Direct.
The simple answer is No!
For any motor policy, be it a car, van or motorcycle, you no longer get days of grace to pay your premium.
Since the set up of the Motor Insurance Database, this facility has been removed from all motor policies. The MID was introduced by the EU so that in each member country there was a database on which each insurer had to register every vehicle they insured.
Then, if a policyholder was involved in an accident the insurer could check the database to see who the Third Party involved was insured with, so that claims could be dealt with more quickly. This was particularly important where foreign vehicles were involved because it often took a long and difficult search to establish who the foreign insurer was.
As a consequence the EU decided there could be no days of grace after the renewal date because before it had become a ‘grey area’, where no one could be sure if the policy was going to be renewed and hence whether the vehicle was insured or not. So the situation is quite clear now, you must pay your renewal premium on or before the renewal date otherwise all cover provided by your policy will cease, you will then be driving your vehicle uninsured and open to prosecution by the Police.
Therefore it is important to take notice of your renewal invitation and to contact us prior to the renewal date to pay your premium or to make any changes in cover so that we can obtain a revised renewal premium for you, otherwise you will become uninsured.
