From singing opera to helping lead Scotland's trade association SELECT towards continued success, meet David Wright, SELECT Head of External Affairs. His cuppa: Black coffee.
Born in Kirkcaldy and raised in Dundee, David began developing his business skills straight from school.
After studying economics, David joined Esso as an industrial sector salesman, selling fuels and lubricants. After a five year stint in London in various Budgets and Economics roles, David moved back to Scotland as Exxon Chemical Public Affairs Manager, for the development of the Mossmorran petrochemical plant.
After working over 20 years with Esso/Exxon in his various roles, David was offered a position as Business Development Manager at SELECT. His brief was to modernise the long-standing trade association. David made a start by changing the identity of the trade association, from ECA of Scotland to SELECT - the third identity change attempt in 30 years. SELECT’s new branding was a success and the association is now fully recognised for their influence on parliament, greatly expanded membership, beneficial training courses and informative trade publications, including the award winning “CABLEtalk” magazine.
David’s ambitious and versatile nature has led him to achieving an MBA as well as training to become an opera singer. David is currently part of the Tayside Opera.
“Singing is incredibly therapeutic,” said David. "Just as playing rugby was when I was younger”.
David played centre for Harris FP in Dundee and for Scottish Midlands. He and his son recently resurrected this rugby club and brought it back to playing league rugby where it will continue having a positive impact on the players and the community.
