Pupils from four Westminster schools took part in a ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ event to make a solar powered car entirely out of rubbish.
Forty competitors, aged 12 and 13, used their science text books, assorted pieces of plastic, wood and metal and the power of the sun to design and race their own homemade vehicles.
Students from St Augustine’s High School, Westminster City School, St George’s School and Paddington Academy gained a rare insight into the design process used by industry as well as practicing their presentation skills and having the chance to apply their science skills to a real life hands on problem.
All the pupils worked together in their teams to battle it out for the first prize of £40 which was won by St George's School.
Jeff Ingham, Westminster council’s Secondary Strategy Science Consultant, who led the event said: “There were smiles all round from the pupils - everyone had a great time. Despite the frenzied pace, the level of teamwork and fair play made choosing the winners a difficult job”.
Westminster City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Sarah Richardson, said: “This event is a wonderful way for students to to make science come to life. Through fun activities we hope to encourage pupils to excel at their work and hold aspirations to use their skills beyond the classroom.”
